Shillong Residents Send Emergency Aid to Flood-Hit Assam

Shillong: Shillong residents mobilized to send truckloads of relief to flood-stricken Assam. The Shillong Socio-Cultural Assamese Students’ Association led the charge. Volunteers spent days hitting the pavement across the city to gather supplies. They set up collection points to make it easy for locals to drop off necessities. People handed over rations, water, baby food, diapers, and first-aid kits. They also gave mosquito repellents, toiletries, disinfectants, candles, batteries, clothes, blankets, sanitary pads, and livestock feed.

Some citizens chipped in with cash. A team of volunteers hauled the cargo to Sivasagar on July 31. They worked through the night to sort, pack, and ship the aid. The effort spanned multiple communities and organizations rather than just one group. SSASA president Kaushik Das said the group considered it their responsibility to help. "The initiative was never about one organisation but about the collective compassion of the people of Meghalaya and Assam," the association stated.

SSASA formed in 1977 to support Assamese students. It has focused on student welfare and charity for five decades. The group thanked everyone who gave time or gear. The mission highlights deep ties between the two states.
