Shillong: Shillong is ready for the 135th edition of the Durand Cup. India's oldest football tournament kicks off July 31. Matches run until August 23 across five major cities including Ranchi, Kolkata, Guwahati, and Imphal.
Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Wailadmiki Shylla spoke at a press conference recently. He said, "Meghalaya was proud to host the prestigious competition." The minister backs three local sides: Shillong Lajong FC, Nongthymmai Sports Social and Cultural Club, and Rangdajied United FC.
Lt Gen Mohit Wadhwa confirmed 24 teams will compete. These squads are split into six groups. Eight games take place at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Shillong. The slate includes six league matches, a quarter-final, and a semi-final showdown. A top squad from Mumbai will also travel to play in the city.
