Guwahati: Shillong hosted the 24th Swadesh-Swabhiman lecture series on July 11 at the Devkumar Das Memorial Hall. Students and scholars gathered to study Assam. They discussed the state's history, language, and modern social struggles.
The Shillong Socio-Cultural Assamese Students' Association and Axom Kotha Group ran the show. It marked a major part of the association's golden jubilee celebration. Alankrita Ray led the event. Dr. Kuladhar Saikia opened the floor by calling for more research into local heritage. He pushed students to stay involved, stating, "revisit both the well-documented and lesser-known dimensions of Assam's social, historical and cultural heritage through evidence-based research and informed discussion."
Nine students presented original research on everything from border trade to the Ambubachi festival. Rikee Talukdar linked the songs of Bhupen Hazarika to the ties between Shillong and Assam. Other speakers looked at financial literacy, the linguistic roots of Assamese, and the works of Srimanta Sankardeva. The event drew a crowd of teachers, researchers, and local figures.
Organizers said the series builds critical thinking for the next generation. It remains a key platform for high-level study. Ayushman Dutta closed the day with a vote of thanks.
