Shillong: Shillong College hosted the 20th National Statistics Day on Monday. The National Statistics Office organized the event to honor Prof. Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis, the man who built India's statistical system. Officials gathered to talk about using routine government data to sharpen policy and fix public services.
Monojit Das, Deputy Director General of the NSO in Shillong, argued that administrative data acts as the heart of modern governance. He wants different departments to share information while keeping privacy laws tight. He said, "Administrative data has become the backbone of evidence-based governance."
Students need to get smarter about numbers. Prof. Bishal Gurung from North Eastern Hill University wants schools to teach statistics as a standalone subject. He believes this will help young people apply math to real world problems. NEHU students, college faculty, and state officials attended the sessions.
State officers discussed local efforts to clean up datasets to match national standards. The day wrapped up with an extempore speech contest. Hundaka Leoza Hinge from St. Anthony’s College took the top spot, followed by classmates and local students in a display of statistical aptitude.
