Seven Assam Youths Rescued From Arunachal Hydropower Project After Alleged Abuse

Guwahati: A rescue operation in Arunachal Pradesh has liberated seven youths from Assam who were allegedly subjected to physical and mental abuse at a hydropower construction site. The workers, hailing from the Amarpur area, were reportedly lured by middlemen with promises of employment before being put to work on a culvert at the Lower Dibang Hydroelectric Project in Roing.

The Shadia District Committee of the Takam Mising Porin Kebang (TMPK) spearheaded the rescue on June 8. Assisted by the Mising Mimag Kebang and central committee leader Poonam Tayeng Morang, the team intervened after receiving distress reports from the victims' families. The group had been working under an Arunachal-based contractor for nearly three months.

Rescuers reported finding evidence of severe mistreatment upon arrival. Members of the rescue team claimed they observed visible injuries on the workers, stating, "they found visible signs of physical assault on the youths, including injuries allegedly caused by beatings with iron rods." The organization further alleged that the laborers were routinely denied adequate food and forced to endure extreme weather conditions.

In the wake of the incident, the TMPK issued a warning to families and job seekers to exercise caution and avoid working through unverified agents. The organization is now calling for a full investigation and strict penalties for those involved in the exploitation. Authorities have yet to release an official statement regarding the situation.
