Guwahati: Life in Chapar, Assam, came to a standstill on June 9 as local organizations enforced a 12-hour shutdown. Residents closed markets and businesses from 6 am to 6 pm to demand that the liquor outlet, Hrishi Restaurant, remain permanently shuttered.
The facility, located in Ward No. 5, has faced intense local opposition since it opened several months ago. While the Excise Department previously sealed the shop following public outcry and highway blockades, protesters allege that current efforts are underway to resume operations.
The attempt to reopen the business has sparked renewed tension in the area. Local groups remain firm in their stance, arguing that the establishment operates against the wishes of the public. One protester stated, "The renewed attempt to operationalise the outlet has led to growing tension in Chapar, with protesters warning of further agitation if their demand for its permanent closure is not met."
Authorities have not yet released a new statement regarding the status of the liquor shop. Meanwhile, community organizations have pledged to continue their demonstrations until a permanent closure is guaranteed.
