Gangtok: A herd of Mishmi Takins has been filmed in North Sikkim, marking the first confirmed sighting of the rare goat-antelope in the state in more than twenty years. Forest and Environment Department officials recorded the eight-member herd during a routine patrol in the Bakuchen area of the Tingda Reserve Forest.

The Mishmi Takin is listed as vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List and is native to the eastern Himalayas. These mountain-dwelling animals are known for their shaggy coats and ability to thrive in rugged, high-altitude terrain. Experts noted that the animals secrete an oily substance from their skin to survive extreme cold and wet weather conditions.

State officials emphasized that the sighting is significant because Sikkim marks the western edge of the species' global range. Regarding the discovery, the department stated, "The footage documents a herd of eight individuals, representing the largest group of Takins ever recorded from this locality."

Wildlife experts believe the presence of this healthy group reflects the ecological integrity of the region. They noted that maintaining habitat connectivity remains vital for the survival of such species. The Forest and Environment Department attributed the success to ongoing conservation and habitat protection efforts. Researchers expect the new footage will provide essential data on the distribution and population status of the Takin to help guide future protection strategies.
