Guwahati: Residents descended on the Tinsukia Zila Parishad office on October 1 to protest against president Bhadeswar Moran. They claim he handled the Jagun Daily Market allotment illegally. Angry voices filled the air. Protesters chanted, "Bhadeswar Moran Murdabad," and demanded an immediate end to the current tax collection practices.
Locals allege Moran bypassed standard procedures to grant Tirtha Basumatary control over the market. Basumatary has reportedly collected taxes from traders for three months. This arrangement allegedly sidelined three official tax collectors. Protesters say the previous lease held by Anjit Hajong expired on June 30. They expected a new tender process to begin on July 1.
Critics point to political ties. They claim Basumatary is a BJP worker with close links to the Zila Parishad president. While a fresh tender opened on September 19, the winning group Jemti Dal failed to take control of the market by the October 1 deadline. The Jagun Daily Market sits near the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border. The tender for the site is valued at approximately Rs 18.71 lakh. Moran has not yet responded to these accusations.
