Protest Against Drug Sales Turns Violent in Guwahati

Guwahati: A protest against the alleged sale of illicit ganja turned violent in Guwahati's Arya Nagar area on June 7, resulting in multiple injuries and property damage. The confrontation erupted when a gathering of local residents, intended to address drug-related activities, descended into a clash between two opposing groups over the identities of those involved in the trade.

The unrest left several people injured, including a police officer, media personnel, and local anti-drug activist Jitendra Saloi. During the disorder, a vehicle was vandalized while police worked to disperse the crowd and restore order. All injured individuals were taken to local hospitals for medical treatment.

Tensions surrounding the incident were amplified by viral social media videos featuring claims of provocative slogans being used during the altercation. Some participants from the local Bihari community expressed that while they support the fight against crime, the situation should not be viewed through a communal lens. One individual emphasized this position, stating: "We have no objection to action against unlawful activities but urged people not to turn the matter into a communal issue."

The area where the incident occurred falls under the Guwahati Central constituency, which is represented by legislator Vijay Kumar Gupta. While investigations into the violence continue, authorities have begun taking action against those responsible for the escalation. Officials have yet to release a formal statement regarding the unverified claims and social media allegations linked to the event.
