Shillong: A post-mortem examination of 27-year-old Trophimos Khongmawloh, whose body was exhumed last month, revealed several injury marks. However, medical experts have concluded that these injuries were non-fatal and not sufficient to cause his death.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem confirmed that investigators are waiting for histopathological and toxicological test results, which should arrive within two weeks. He noted, "We have received the post-mortem report, but it is not yet complete. The report indicates that there were injury marks on the body. However, the doctors have stated that these injuries were non-fatal and not sufficient to cause death."
The examination also discovered sharp objects inside the stomach of the deceased, supporting earlier claims that he had consumed glass. Khongmawloh's body was exhumed on May 18, nearly 40 days after his burial in Pynter village, to assist in an investigation into allegations of physical assault.
Public scrutiny surrounding the case intensified after a social media video appeared to show Khongmawloh being attacked inside the Pynter Community Hall on April 7. His father, Netnobiweit Khongsdoh, filed an FIR on May 5, alleging that the village headman and members of the Village Defence Party carried out the assault. The family also raised concerns about being denied the chance to view the body properly before the burial, as well as conflicting reports from villagers claiming the death resulted from consuming poisonous insects.
