Shillong: The Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board cleared an ethanol unit in Byrnihat of pollution violations. Inspectors checked M/s Umiam Distillation Pvt. Ltd. on June 29. They moved fast. Public complaints hit social media, so the agency sent a task force to the Export Promotion Industrial Park without waiting for a formal filing.

The team recorded particulate matter at 23.1 mg/Nm3. This sits safely below the 50 mg/Nm3 cap set in the facility's operating permit. Officials watched the pollution gear work in real time. The factory runs an electrostatic precipitator and a zero liquid discharge system that recycles treated water into the cooling tower.

Investigators grabbed effluent samples for lab testing. They did not sit idle. Byrnihat is a non-attainment town under the National Clean Air Programme, meaning the state keeps a tight watch on local factories. The board noted that over the past two years, they issued closure orders to several red-category firms. State officials said they remain fully aware of local worries: "Monitoring and enforcement measures in the industrial town are being carried out on a continuous basis."
