Shillong: A scooter slammed into East Khasi Hills Additional Superintendent of Police Lovish Garg at 1:30 am on September 18. The officer was working a checkpoint at Urkaliar in Shillong. He signaled the rider to stop, but the driver hit the gas. The scooter plowed directly into Garg, leaving him with serious injuries. Medics rushed him to a hospital where he remains in the High Dependency unit.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Dangsan Khyriem suspects the hit was no accident. "The circumstances indicated that the act was deliberate and appeared to have been intended to cause grievous injury to the officer while escaping the police check," Khyriem said. Police arrested the two men on the scooter. Officials currently identify them as suspected members of the Khasi Students Union.
Investigators are now digging into why the pair was on the road at that hour and what prompted their flight. Officers are filing charges under attempt to murder provisions. This collision occurred during a period of ramped-up security across the city. Authorities recently increased checkpoints after several petrol bomb attacks targeted government and police infrastructure. Local police vowed to maintain these operations to protect public safety and warned that anyone trying to dodge a legal stop will face the full weight of the law.

A local court remanded the two suspects to 14 days of judicial custody following their arrest. Traffic SP Hari Prashant confirmed that medical examinations conducted after the arrest indicated the men were intoxicated at the time of the collision. Police have also invoked charges of disobedience of an order in addition to the attempted murder count.
Garg is reported in stable condition at Woodland Hospital. He suffered a concussion, two head lacerations, and injuries to his hip. While the officer briefly lost consciousness, his CT scans showed no major neurological or bone damage. He remains under observation in a private room, undergoing a course of antibiotics to prevent infection.

Consultant neurosurgeon Dr. Dasuk Lang Roy Disiar confirmed that Garg remains stable with normal blood pressure and oxygen levels. After undergoing minor surgery for his injuries, he was moved from the High Dependency unit to room 609 of Block B. While he stays under medical observation for up to a week, he is clear of major neurological or skeletal damage.
East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal visited the officer at the hospital on Friday evening. Officials noted that the increased security measures, which led to the Urkaliar checkpoint, stem from a series of petrol bomb attacks. These attacks follow the August 19 violence during a bike rally that targeted non-local individuals and vehicles, resulting in the arrest of several KSU leaders.
