Police Officer Struck by Scooter During Shillong Checkpoint Operation

Shillong: A scooter slammed into East Khasi Hills Additional Superintendent of Police Lovish Garg at 1:30 am on September 18. The officer was working a checkpoint at Urkaliar in Shillong. He signaled the rider to stop, but the driver hit the gas. The scooter plowed directly into Garg, leaving him with serious injuries. Medics rushed him to a hospital where he remains in the High Dependency unit.

East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Dangsan Khyriem suspects the hit was no accident. "The circumstances indicated that the act was deliberate and appeared to have been intended to cause grievous injury to the officer while escaping the police check," Khyriem said. Police arrested the two men on the scooter. Officials currently identify them as suspected members of the Khasi Students Union.

Investigators are now digging into why the pair was on the road at that hour and what prompted their flight. Officers are filing charges under attempt to murder provisions. This collision occurred during a period of ramped-up security across the city. Authorities recently increased checkpoints after several petrol bomb attacks targeted government and police infrastructure. Local police vowed to maintain these operations to protect public safety and warned that anyone trying to dodge a legal stop will face the full weight of the law.
