Police investigate deaths of young couple found in Shillong shed

Shillong: Authorities are investigating the deaths of a young couple discovered hanging inside a roadside shed in Lumsohphoh, Nongthymmai, on Sunday morning. The deceased have been identified as 21-year-old Semanto Hajong from Ranikor and 22-year-old Pronome Hajong from Balat, both hailing from South West Khasi Hills.

East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem confirmed the victims worked locally and maintained a relationship, though they resided in separate housing provided by their employers. “Preliminary findings point towards a possible suicide,” the SP told reporters.

A post-mortem examination was completed at NEIGRIHMS on Monday, with final reports expected within a week. Investigators reported no visible injuries on the bodies other than ligature marks around the necks. Laitumkhrah Police Station has registered a case of unnatural death and officials have secured CCTV footage from the area for further analysis.

The Meghalaya Koch Students’ Union has raised concerns regarding the circumstances of the deaths. The organization is calling for a transparent investigation led by independent forensic experts to determine if foul play was involved. The union also urged the government to prioritize the safety of minority and indigenous communities across the state.
