Pilgrimage to Mawsynram cave concludes under police watch

Shillong: The annual pilgrimage to the Krem Mawjymbuin cave in Mawsynram wrapped up Sunday under heavy security. About 200 devotees hiked from Mahadev Khola in Shillong, starting their trek at 3 am. Others arrived by car. It stayed peaceful.

The High Court of Meghalaya greenlit the event but kept a tight leash on activities. Devotees may only pour water on the stalagmite. Authorities banned all other religious rites and materials. The site is a holy spot for Hindus who view the formation as a manifestation of Lord Shiva.

Police and magistrates ringed the cave to prevent any trouble. Officers escorted the foot marchers all the way from Shillong. Officials kept a close eye on everyone to ensure compliance with court mandates. A spokesperson noted the event "remained peaceful from start to finish." The state successfully balanced religious practice with local sensitivities.
