Shillong: Water supplies in Shillong, Jowai, Tura, Nongpoh, and Nongstoin face imminent shutdown. Muster roll workers under the Joint Action Committee warned of a work stoppage starting Thursday. They demand four months of back pay from April to July 2026. The union also wants the revised Variable Dearness Allowance deposited immediately.
Union chairperson D. Iakai said the delays created dire straits for staff. "The continued delay has caused severe financial hardship to workers and their families, many of whom depend entirely on their monthly earnings for survival," Iakai noted. Workers may leave for other jobs to pay for food, school fees, and rent if the money does not arrive within two days.
Chief Engineer Robert Sing Nongbri met with union leaders on Monday. He confirmed that funds for April through August are ready. He promised the payments would hit accounts in two days. The union also demands the Meghalaya Regular Casual Workers Scheme, the Employees’ Provident Fund, and registration under the Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board. Nongbri expects to address these matters later in August. He also discussed category upgrades for staff with over five years of service.
