Guwahati: A passenger boat split open Monday in the Gangadhar River. More than 100 people are stuck in the water near Guma Ferry Ghat in Tamarkhat, Assam. The vessel was headed from Tamarkhat to Kathaltali when the bottom cracked. Water flooded the hull. A section of the boat submerged quickly.
Panic set in. Passengers scrambled to the highest points of the boat to escape the rising tide. Many reported water levels reaching their chest. A majority of those on board are women and children. The boat carried an e-rickshaw and over 20 motorcycles.
Safety standards appear nonexistent. Allegations suggest the operator ignored basic rules for years. The boat lacked a marine engine and life jackets. Critics claim the transit was an "unsafe arrangement" for all involved. Officials have yet to provide updates on rescue efforts or the current condition of the victims.
