Imphal: The Manipur State Unit of the Naga People’s Front has condemned a violent ambush near TM Kashom Village that claimed the life of truck driver Nitish Kumar. The incident, blamed on suspected Kuki militants, also left several police personnel injured and caused significant damage to a section of National Highway 202. Awangbow Newmai, the party president, stated that the attack reflects a broader failure to maintain the rule of law and protect civilian lives in the region.
The violence erupted during a period of rising frustration over the disappearance of six Naga men who were abducted on May 13, 2026. The NPF-MSU highlighted recent testimonies from survivors, shared during a visit by Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh to Makhan Village. These accounts reportedly contradict earlier reports provided to the government by senior security officials, raising serious questions about the quality of police investigations and intelligence gathering.
According to these accounts, the missing men were detained at Leilon Vaiphei by local women before being transferred to armed militants. The party is now calling for a formal review of how witness statements were collected and why state forces failed to prevent the excavation and destruction of the highway. Despite repeated government assurances, there has been no tangible progress in locating the missing individuals.
The NPF-MSU warned that the lack of accountability is threatening public trust in state institutions. The party is demanding a transparent status report on the missing men and a comprehensive inquiry into the lapses that allowed the destruction of critical infrastructure to occur under the watch of security forces.
