Agartala: Authorities in North Tripura have officially started preparations for India's 16th Census, which is set to be the nation's first fully digital population count. Officials outlined the new procedures during a press conference in Dharmanagar, emphasizing a shift from traditional paper forms to mobile applications and digital platforms to increase efficiency and accuracy.
About 1,000 personnel, including senior administrators and field workers, will manage the operation. A three-day training program is currently underway to prepare the workforce for these new technical requirements. The process marks a major technological upgrade in how the government gathers vital population data.
For the first time, citizens can participate by uploading their information through a government portal. This self-registration period will run from July 17 to July 31, 2026. Residents will be asked to provide details for themselves and their families by answering 33 specific questions. The administration has promised that all submitted data will be kept strictly confidential under existing legal protections.
The census will follow a two-phase schedule. The initial field work is set for August 1 to August 30, 2026, with the second phase planned for February 2027. Ahead of these dates, the district will launch public awareness campaigns to guide residents through the questions. Officials are urging citizens to cooperate to ensure the project successfully supports future national development planning.
