Nitin Gadkari Touts Bamboo Industry Potential in Northeast India

Shillong: Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari championed the economic potential of the Northeast region during a summit in Shillong on Monday. He urged the adoption of technology-driven solutions to capitalize on the region's abundant natural resources, specifically focusing on the versatility of bamboo.

Gadkari explained that bamboo has evolved beyond traditional uses, noting its application in producing furniture, ethanol, compressed natural gas, and even white coal. He emphasized that the region is strategically positioned to become a central hub for sustainable, value-added manufacturing that can create local jobs and strengthen the regional economy.

The minister lightened the mood while discussing bamboo-based textiles, which include vests and undergarments. "It is very good and feels like an air-conditioner. I have one. If anyone wants to see, let me know," Gadkari quipped, drawing laughter from the audience.
