Shillong: Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari will launch six significant road infrastructure projects in Meghalaya on Monday. Valued at Rs 3,214 crore, the initiative aims to enhance the state's transportation network and stimulate long-term economic growth.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma confirmed that these projects include four new National Highway developments alongside the improvement of two existing corridors. The infrastructure expansion features the Tura Bypass costing Rs 951 crore, the Dhubri-Phulbari Bridge to Selsella road at Rs 737 crore, the Pynursla Bypass at Rs 564 crore, and the Selsella to Goeragre road at Rs 504 crore. Additionally, work will commence on the Shillong to Dawki highway and the Jowai Bypass.
The announcement coincides with the North East India Infrastructure Summit and Exhibition 2026, which begins in Shillong on June 15. The two-day event, organised by the Federation of Industry and Commerce of North Eastern Region, the state government, and the Build India Foundation, will focus on infrastructure-led growth. According to official reports, the summit is "expected to bring together policymakers, investors, infrastructure developers, financial institutions and technology firms to explore opportunities for infrastructure-led growth in the Northeast."
Local authorities have implemented traffic restrictions to manage the influx of delegates and officials during the event. The Shillong Traffic Police has closed the route between Umsawli, Mawkasiang, NEIGRIHMS, and Polo. Commuters are advised to utilize the Mawpat to Golf Links or Langkyrding to Pynthorumkhrah roads while a no-entry policy remains in effect near Polo.
