New Shillong Traffic Rules Trigger Commuter Chaos

Shillong: Shillong Traffic Police pushed a new pilot program on Wednesday that has turned local roads into a mess. Drivers coming from Rilbong or Anjalee Point can no longer turn right at Rhino Point. Instead, they must drive to the gridlocked Barik Point just to loop back for a left turn.

This detour adds 1.5 kilometers to a standard trip. Commuters get stuck in the heavy traffic near Civil Hospital, burning through gas and patience. The new rules affect people living in Laban, Lumshatsngi, Lawsohtun, and Rilbong.

Residents want the changes scrapped immediately. One local hit the nail on the head: “We are being forced to waste precious time and burn expensive fuel navigating redundant loops, all while the primary arteries remain choked with vehicles that shouldn’t need to be there in the first place.”

Officials claimed the plan would clear up the city's narrow streets. It has done the opposite. The streets are now packed and tempers are hitting a breaking point. Citizens are calling on police to kill the experiment and find better ways to move traffic.
