Shillong: Laban now has a new four-storey municipal market complex at Iewdak. The RCC+4 facility cost Rs 14.27 crore. It features a community hall and office space for the Dorbar Shnong. Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Minister Sanbor Shullai inaugurated the site on Saturday. The Shillong Municipal Board implemented the project with funds from the North Eastern Council.
Shullai said the market would strengthen commercial activities. The facility serves as a centre for community programmes. NEC secretary SK Bhalla noted the project was envisioned several years ago. He believes the space will strengthen grassroots governance. Dorbar Shnong Laban secretary Edward Kharwanlang asked shopkeepers to maintain cleanliness. He said they must ensure proper upkeep of the complex so that the facility could serve the public for many years.
The Minister also announced an additional Rs 2 crore to build a hall on the terrace of the complex. Construction starts this month. Another Rs 2 crore was sanctioned to renovate the Lumshatsngi Market. Shullai also opened a new motorable road and aqueduct project worth Rs 1.65 crore.
The Cantonment area is getting a major upgrade. Shullai announced a Rs 35 crore infrastructure plan for the zone. Officials already sanctioned Rs 18 crore for these works. A major policy shift also allows for taller buildings in the locality. The Ministry of Defence issued a notification permitting construction up to G+3. This ends a restriction that lasted for decades. Shullai credited the progress to support from Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.
