Shillong: Laban now boasts a modern four-storey municipal market complex at Iewdak. Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Minister Sanbor Shullai opened the building this past Saturday. The project cost Rs 14.27 crore and relied on financial backing from the North Eastern Council. The Shillong Municipal Board handled construction.
The concrete facility does more than house traders. It includes a community hall and office space for the Dorbar Shnong. Shullai pushed for the project to bolster business and community ties. He stated: "The market would strengthen commercial activities in the locality while also serving as a centre for community programmes."
Shullai also detailed upcoming work. He secured Rs 2 crore to build an additional hall on the market terrace, with work starting this month. A separate Rs 2 crore project will renovate the Lumshatsngi Market starting this month as well. Furthermore, the government sanctioned Rs 18 crore out of a larger Rs 35 crore proposal for the Cantonment area.
The minister also cut the ribbon on a combined motorable road and aqueduct project worth Rs 1.65 crore. NEC secretary SK Bhalla noted that the vision for the market began years ago. SMB CEO PK Boro and Dorbar Shnong Laban secretary Edward Kharwanlang attended the ceremony. Kharwanlang reminded shopkeepers to keep the new facility clean.
