Shillong: NEIGRIHMS doctors pulled off a medical first for Eastern India. They performed a minimally invasive trans-catheter tricuspid valve repair on a 27-year-old woman. The patient struggled with severe heart valve leakage. She faced high risks if she underwent traditional open-heart surgery for a second time. A decade ago, she survived a major heart operation.
Prof. Animesh Mishra led the Heart Team through the three-hour procedure. Experts from the CTVS and Anaesthesia departments joined him. Meril Life Sciences provided technical help. This marks only the eighth time this surgery happened across the entire country. It is the first time a patient this young received the repair. The facility kept costs under control. The team said the procedure "cost less than half of what is typically charged elsewhere in India."
Separately, officials traveled to Ri-Bhoi to check on a turmeric project. The Integrated Value Chain Enhancement for Environmental Sustainability initiative aims to boost local farming. A high-level delegation inspected a new processing plant on Friday. They met with a Farmer Producer Organisation to discuss the facility. The group finished their tour with a sit-down meeting with Deputy Commissioner Dr. Abhishek Saini. The project remains a partnership between the School of Livelihood and Rural Development and the United Nations Development Programme.
