NEHU Hosts MedTech Fest and World Blood Donor Day in Shillong

Shillong: The Department of Biomedical Engineering at North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) hosted the MedTech Fest 2026 and observed World Blood Donor Day on its Shillong campus this past Saturday. The event drew about 100 students, faculty, and researchers to celebrate healthcare innovation and emphasize the necessity of blood donations.

DSW Dean Prof RL Nongkhlaw opened the event by stressing the value of civic engagement. He stated that voluntary blood donation is one of the most valuable contributions an individual can make. Prof. Sirsendu Sekhar Ray, the head of the biomedical engineering department, urged students to apply their technical skills to solve modern healthcare problems.

Educational sessions addressed the critical importance of donor safety and the role of blood in modern medical treatments. Organizers emphasized that blood cannot be artificially manufactured, making voluntary donors an essential component of the healthcare system.

Students presented research and prototypes covering fields like artificial intelligence, nanomedicine, and rehabilitation technologies. Experts Dr. Samrat Paul and Dr. Sharad Kumar Kulashreshtha evaluated the projects, while Sukrit Modak took top honors in the innovation competition. Sabnam Nargis Khanam secured the win in the technical quiz, and the day concluded with a vote of thanks from coordinator Dr. Nitin Sahai.
