Guwahati: Counting for the Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election kicks off at 8 am on October 9. Nagaon District Commissioner Aranyak Saikia confirmed the timeline yesterday. Officials will open strong rooms at 6 am to begin the process. Postal ballots go first, followed by votes from electronic voting machines.
The operation spans two primary locations. Staff will tally votes for Samaguri, Dhing, and Rupohihat at Dawson Higher Secondary School. The Government Boys School will host counting for Nagaon-Batadroba and Raha. Each center utilizes 14 counting tables. The process will run 18 to 22 rounds per segment. Tuesday saw a 76 percent voter turnout. Final numbers may climb slightly after adding late arrivals.
Fifteen candidates await the results. The race features BJP pick Devashish Sharma, Congress representative Sibamoni Bora, and AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal. Ajmal claims a massive victory is imminent. He expects a margin of 4 to 5 lakh votes. He remains defiant. “Inshallah, the bypoll result will be in my favour. I will be smiling, and the rest will be crying. But I still want to give my best wishes to the BJP and Congress. Someday, they will win,” Ajmal said.
Ajmal also mocked his rivals. He alleged that the BJP and Congress candidates are effectively on the same side. He claimed that Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma abandoned the race for the seat. The actual verdict arrives tomorrow.
