Nagaland Struggles with Outdated Disability Data and Persistent Social Stigma

Kohima: During the recent inauguration of the Early Intervention and Community Rehabilitation Center in Kohima, experts highlighted a significant gap in the state's welfare infrastructure. Kopele V Tepa, founder of the Bumblebee Society, emphasized that Nagaland is currently operating with obsolete disability data. This lack of accurate information makes it difficult for authorities and non-governmental organizations to identify and support individuals who require specialized care.

Beyond the logistical challenges of data collection, deep-seated social stigma continues to play a major role in the exclusion of disabled citizens. Many families remain reluctant to seek formal recognition or assistance, effectively rendering thousands of people invisible to the systems designed to help them. The launch of the new rehabilitation facility aims to address these systemic issues by providing accessible services and fostering a more inclusive environment for those living with disabilities in the region.
