Nagaland Minister Calls for Cooperative Reform and Self-Reliance

Kohima: Nagaland PHED Minister Jacob Zhimomi pushed cooperative societies to spearhead nature conservation efforts. He spoke at the Agri Expo Site in Chümoukedima during the Cooperative Week 2026 tree plantation drive. The minister planted a sapling and praised the local officials for organizing the event.

The state holds massive potential in its forests and biodiversity. Village cooperatives must protect these assets. Zhimomi argued that these groups form the backbone of the economy by fueling agriculture and craft production. He noted that only 2,000 of the 8,200 registered societies actually function today.

He wants a change in mindset. Nagaland imports too many goods. “We must become producers and not remain only consumers,” Zhimomi said. He warned groups against relying on government subsidies. Instead, societies should use financial help for value-added work in poultry, fisheries, and handicrafts.

New Delhi is currently moving to computerize records to improve governance. Zhimomi suggested linking cooperatives with Self Help Groups to boost accountability. He also pushed youth to choose entrepreneurship over waiting for government handouts. Chümoukedima remains a vital hub for this growth.
