Kohima: Nagaland celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Matritva Abhiyan on June 9. State Health and Family Welfare Minister P Paiwang Konyak launched the commemoration at the Directorate of Health and Family Welfare in Kohima, highlighting the program's significant impact on maternal health over the past decade.
Since the launch of the scheme, more than 23,000 pregnant women in Nagaland have accessed antenatal care. The program has been instrumental in identifying 2,303 high-risk pregnancies, ensuring that these mothers received necessary early treatment. Minister Konyak praised the dedication of medical professionals who brought specialist care to underserved areas by traveling to critical health facilities with portable ultrasound equipment.
Reflecting on the progress made, Konyak stated, "Over these ten years in Nagaland, our doctors and gynaecologists have not waited for mothers to come to them. Specialists have travelled to critical health facilities (PHCs and CHCs) to ensure that no mother is left behind, and any high risk is detected early."
The health department currently provides services through 60 designated units, including district hospitals and community health centers. Furthermore, all 336 functional Health and Wellness Centres in the state are now equipped to facilitate specialist tele-consultations via the eSanjeevani platform. As part of the anniversary observance, additional sessions are scheduled throughout June to expand outreach, while officials continue to track high-risk cases until delivery and into the postpartum period.
