Kohima: The Nagaland Baptist Church Council scheduled a statewide day of corporate prayer for Sunday, October 4, 2026. This move follows a spike in deaths and illnesses linked to illicit or adulterated liquor. At least 20 people have died in Mokokchung and Tuensang districts alone.
The council urged residents to pray during worship services or at home. They emphasized that the crisis requires more than simple talk. The organization stated that the situation should not be met only with “words, arguments or blame” but also with humility and prayer.
Prayers will focus on grieving families and those currently suffering from alcohol-related health issues. Church leaders also asked for divine guidance for the police, excise officials, and state legislators. They want these authorities to show more integrity and courage when enforcing prohibition laws. The council pushed for better crackdowns on the supply of illicit booze while continuing to support those battling addiction.
Civil society groups and student organizations play a role here too. The council asked these bodies to work peacefully with the government to protect lives. The Nagaland State Human Rights Commission has already stepped in, demanding official reports from the state government regarding the deaths within a four-week window. The church council hopes these efforts lead toward a sober, healthy, and peaceful Nagaland.
