Naga Tribal Groups Demand Justice and Suspension of Kuki Militant Pact

Imphal: A coalition of Naga tribal organizations, the Joint Tribal Council, has condemned the brutal killing of six individuals kidnapped from Kangpokpi district. The council, representing the Zeme, Rongmei, and Liangmai communities, held a press conference to demand accountability for the incident. Convenor Merachao Inka reported that the victims were returned with bodies so badly mutilated that formal identification was nearly impossible.

The council identified the Kuki National Front-P as the group responsible for the murders. Leaders alleged that the abduction involved the chief of Leilon Vaiphei village, members of the local women's society, and specific police officers. Merachao Inka stated, "This incident has deeply shocked not only the Naga community but also various tribal organizations and valley-based civil society groups."

In response to the violence, the council has issued several demands. They are calling for the Kuki National Front-P to be classified as a terrorist organization and for the government to terminate the Suspension of Operations agreement with Kuki militant factions. The council also requested that Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen resign from her post due to her personal connection to the Kuki leadership.

Beyond the immediate criminal investigation, the groups characterized Leilon Vaiphei as an illegal settlement. They claimed the land lease granted to residents a century ago has expired and accused the village of serving as a staging ground for attacks against neighboring communities like Konsakhul. The council is currently seeking legal punishment for the perpetrators and financial compensation for the families of the victims.
