Guwahati: Prime Minister Narendra Modi handed a collection of Indian artisanal gifts to Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto during his official visit. The selection highlighted the country's diverse cultural roots. Front and center sat the rare Manohari Gold Tea from Assam.
Estate workers hand-pluck, roll, and sun-dry the tea during the June second flush season. This specific method creates its signature golden color and flavor. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised the move on social media. He stated, "Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi Ji continues to take Assam’s heritage to the global stage by weaving it into India’s diplomatic outreach."
Sarma noted that the Prime Minister visited the estate earlier this year. Modi spent a night there to talk with the laborers. The gift serves as a nod to that bond with the local workforce.
The package included more than just tea. Modi gave the President an Aipan folk art piece from Uttarakhand. He also included a hand-painted Kashmiri papier-mache bowl. A silver repoussé plate with elephant and floral designs rounded out the display of Indian craftsmanship.
