Aizawl: Mizoram officials cleared 46,191 names from the state voter rolls after finishing a Special Intensive Revision on Sunday. The cull leaves the state with 828,877 registered voters. It accounts for roughly 95 percent of the 8.75 lakh electors previously on the 2025 books.
Deaths claimed the biggest share of the deletions with 21,290 names removed. Officials also purged 13,992 people who moved away, 8,352 who could not be found, and 2,245 duplicates. Joint Chief Electoral Officer Ethel Rothangpuii confirmed the move. Everything was digitized.
A small group stayed off the books by choice. Rothangpuii noted that "312 eligible voters declined to enrol or re-enrol during the exercise, citing religious beliefs." Those people had records in the 2025 rolls or relatives who participated in the last revision.
The Election Commission plans to publish draft rolls on July 4. Residents can file claims or lodge objections between July 5 and August 4 before the final list goes live. The clean-up happens under pressure from the Mizo Zirlai Pawl student union. The group is demanding a hard look at voter numbers in Chakma-heavy southern districts after claiming a 121 percent spike in local voters and 97 new villages. Election officials say they are looking into these complaints.
