Aizawl: Mizoram's newly elected Rajya Sabha member, K. Laltluangkima, confirmed on June 19 that he intends to back the BJP-led NDA government on matters concerning the state's welfare and development. The 62-year-old leader, representing the ruling Zoram People's Movement, clarified that his party remains committed to political neutrality in Parliament. Both he and Lok Sabha representative Richard Vanlalhmangaiha will operate outside the influence of the NDA and the opposition INDIA bloc.
Addressing reporters in Aizawl, Laltluangkima explained his strategy for engaging with national leaders. "We will remain neutral members in Parliament. However, our support to the central government will be issue-based," he stated. He emphasized that his primary objective is to secure federal funding for state programs and ensure that local welfare initiatives succeed. National interests take a backseat to the specific needs of the people of Mizoram, which will be his primary focus throughout his tenure.
The Zoram People's Movement celebrated the victory with a felicitation ceremony held on Friday. Laltluangkima, who secured 26 of 36 votes in the state legislative assembly, acknowledged that the contest was an exhausting ordeal compared to previous elections. He faced opposition from the Mizo National Front candidate Zothansangi Hmar, who captured 10 votes. With both the BJP and Congress abstaining from the race, the victory cements the ZPM's status as an independent regional power following their 2023 rise to office.
