Aizawl: Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma shut down rumors about his party joining the National Democratic Alliance. The Zoram People Movement leader confirmed on June 24 that his party has no interest in a formal coalition with the BJP. He spoke clearly in Aizawl. He wants to keep a friendly link with the central government, but he refuses to sign on with the NDA.

Lalduhoma admitted that both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah asked him to join the alliance several times. He turned them down every time. The issue never even reached the party Political Affairs Committee for a vote. He prefers to keep the ZPM as a regional force, a strategy he credits to former Chief Minister Brig T Sailo.

"We have not joined the NDA. While other parties have, we choose a different path. We want to maintain a very good relationship with the Centre, but an official alignment is not on our table," said Lalduhoma. He argued that regional parties get better results when they keep their distance from national power brokers.

The Chief Minister also addressed the recent deal between the ZPM and the BJP in the Chakma Autonomous District Council. He called it a local fix, not a shift in ideology. No party had the seats to run the council alone. The two groups formed the Chakma Democratic Alliance Legislature Party to end the political limbo that triggered Governor Rule back in January. This deal does not signal a broader shift, according to the Chief Minister.
