Aizawl: Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma shut down rumors on Wednesday. He confirmed his party, the Zoram People’s Movement, will not join the National Democratic Alliance. The party wants to stay regional. They avoid formal ties to the central coalition.
Lalduhoma spoke at a press conference in Aizawl. He noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah invited the party to join the NDA multiple times. The leadership refused. The Political Affairs Committee never even debated the topic.
"Ever since we formed the government, both the Prime Minister and the Home Minister have repeatedly invited us to join the NDA. We have always responded by saying that we are willing to maintain a good working relationship and extend cooperation whenever necessary. Therefore, we do not see any urgency to formally join the alliance," Lalduhoma said.
The Chief Minister pointed to history. He explained that regional parties traditionally worked with whichever group held power in New Delhi. He believes the arrival of national parties in Mizoram damaged this flexibility. He plans to keep his party focused on being a regional entity with a national outlook.
The Chief Minister also addressed the local coalition in the Chakma Autonomous District Council. The ZPM recently teamed up with the BJP there. Lalduhoma called this a matter of necessity. No party held enough seats to run the council alone. That deal was strictly local business.
