Aizawl: Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma officially launched a fleet of 219 new police vehicles on Wednesday during a ceremony at the 3rd Battalion MAP Parade Ground in Aizawl. The rollout is part of the Assistance to States and Union Territories for Modernisation of Police scheme for the 2025-26 fiscal year.
The Ministry of Home Affairs backed the Rs 33.83 crore procurement project, which required a central contribution of Rs 30.45 crore alongside a state share of Rs 3.38 crore. Home Minister K Sapdanga joined senior officials and police leadership at the event to mark the largest recent upgrade to the state's mobile assets. Officials noted that the local force had been unable to purchase new vehicles under this specific modernisation programme since 2017, and had not secured central funding for such efforts since the 2021-22 cycle.
The diverse new fleet features electric scooters and motorcycles, alongside light, medium, and heavy motor vehicles. The inventory also includes specialized units such as prison vans, water tankers, towing trucks for traffic management, and bullet-resistant vehicles for VVIP security. These resources will be distributed across all 44 police stations and 15 outposts, as well as armed battalions, specialized units, and the Police Training School.
Beyond the vehicle fleet, Mizoram secured a total of Rs 43.87 crore through the 2025-26 State Action Plan. According to officials, the funding is intended for "procurement of security equipment, smart policing tools, forensic equipment and mobility assets" to ensure the department remains fully equipped for operational support.
