Shillong: Meghalaya Trinamool Congress leaders face a looming identity crisis. The Election Commission effectively split the party into two separate factions this week. The agency froze the traditional All India Trinamool Congress name and the Flowers and Grass symbol. It issued an interim ruling to resolve the ongoing internal power struggle.
Mamata Banerjee now heads the Mamata All India Trinamool Congress. This group will use the Football Player symbol. Arup Roy leads the rival Democratic Trinamool Congress. They must use the Envelope symbol for their electoral efforts. Both groups retain status as recognized political parties across West Bengal, Meghalaya, and Tripura under these new rules.
Andrew Simons, adviser to the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, says the state unit must eventually choose a side. The current setup only lasts until the commission makes a final decision under the Election Symbols Reservation and Allotment Order of 1968. Simons noted, "the Meghalaya unit would ultimately have to determine which of the two factions it would associate itself with if the present arrangement continues."
The state unit cannot stay linked to both groups forever. Political observers in Shillong are watching closely as party realignments shift the local status quo. The Meghalaya TMC must now decide if they stick with Banerjee or back the Roy-led group to secure their electoral future.
