Shillong: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma announced that Meghalaya now ranks as the third-fastest growing economy in India. Speaking at the North East Infrastructure Summit, Sangma attributed this economic surge to a doubled state budget and a six-fold increase in capital expenditure. The state has invested Rs 50,000 crore into road infrastructure, a level of development he described as unimaginable a decade ago.
Sangma set an ambitious goal to bring large commercial aircraft to Umroi airport within the next year. Despite ongoing technical challenges and legal hurdles that have previously delayed expansion efforts, he remains confident in the 12-month timeline. The government is also pushing to boost the hospitality sector by facilitating the construction of eight five-star hotels, with four projects currently underway.
The state government plans to expand its infrastructure further through a new international football stadium and by hosting the National Games. Sangma projected that the state budget will triple by the 2028-2029 fiscal year, bolstered by a newfound era of regional political stability. He stressed that collaboration remains essential to the state's progress, stating, "I hope this summit is the beginning of a partnership that ensures we take the private sector, the government, and most importantly, the public to new heights."
