Meghalaya Scraps Temporary MPSC Hiring Rules

Shillong: The Meghalaya Cabinet officially scrapped Regulation 3(f) of the 1972 recruitment rules this Tuesday. This rule once allowed temporary government hiring during emergencies. Officials claim the move cleans up a messy system prone to delays.

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said the regulation is now redundant. Modern boards and automated vacancy management handle the workload instead. The state will now use contractual appointments for urgent needs while waiting for permanent hires. Sangma stated the move ensures “greater efficiency and fairness.”

Despite the changes, some critics worry about how the government will handle sudden emergencies. They fear a lack of clear guidelines might open the door for arbitrary decisions. The Cabinet also shook up the hierarchy for the Meghalaya Civil Service. They created four new Special Secretary posts to help officers stuck in dead-end roles.

Finally, the state regularized 38 ad hoc employees hired before 2008. The original paperwork went missing years ago. Officials verified the staff using old treasury records and salary slips to align with Supreme Court mandates.
