Shillong: The SPARK Meghalaya initiative, an acronym for School Programmes in Articulation, Resilience and Kindness, is significantly enhancing the educational experience for thousands of students across the state. Since its launch in March, the programme has been implemented in 25 government and government-aided schools, benefiting over 6,500 students from Classes VI to X. Supported by the Meghalaya Education Department, the project has gained national acclaim as a best practice under the National Education Policy 2020 and recently earned an award at the Indian Education Congress and Awards 2026 for its impact on community engagement.

By moving beyond traditional academic instruction, SPARK introduces creative tools such as Question Walls and Kindness Walls alongside peer-led public speaking sessions. The curriculum focuses on developing soft skills including social-emotional learning, effective communication, and employability readiness. Teachers have reported a positive shift in classroom dynamics, noting that the programme helps educators understand student behavior more deeply. Sylverster Mawthoh, a teacher at Mynken RMSA Secondary School, highlighted that the initiative encourages a more open environment where students feel comfortable asking questions.

Students have also expressed how the programme has reshaped their aspirations. Participants like Havilah Challam and Azareel Kharshandi noted that the initiative helped them embrace their authentic selves and realize that their personal interests can serve as a foundation for future career paths. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has publicly praised the initiative, emphasizing that it aligns with the state's broader mission to foster joyful, quality learning and empower youth to recognize their own potential.

Beyond general development, the programme is actively identifying and nurturing student talent. Organizers have already highlighted 81 students excelling in visual arts, music, and dance during district-level showcases. This focus on artistic and creative growth serves to strengthen Meghalaya's developing entrepreneurial ecosystem, ensuring students are well-prepared for diverse opportunities after graduation.
