Meghalaya Restarts Border Talks With Assam

Shillong: The Meghalaya government officially relaunched efforts to settle border disputes with Assam. Officials reconstituted three regional committees to tackle the six remaining trouble spots along the state line. These include Langpih, Borduar, Nongwah-Mawtamur, Deshdoomreah, Block-I, and Psiar-Khanduli.

Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong leads the Ri-Bhoi team. Power Minister Mehtab Lyngdoh heads the West Khasi Hills panel. Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar takes charge in West Jaintia Hills. Each group includes local MLAs, district council reps, and deputy commissioners. They have 45 days to file their final reports.

Teams will inspect village records and census data. They must walk the ground and talk to the locals. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said the shuffle was needed after recent cabinet changes. The state waited for Assam to settle its own leadership before pushing forward. Sangma is ready to get back to the table. “With both governments now having their teams in place, I expect Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to assign responsibilities to the reconstituted regional committees,” Sangma said.

The committees aim to build on momentum from past rounds of talks. Both sides want to avoid the stagnation of previous decades. Field visits and public asset registers remain the priority for the incoming members.
