Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma gave the green light on Thursday to begin talks on the proposed Leshka Stage-II hydroelectric project. This decision came during a weekly departmental monitoring meeting held in Shillong. The government intends to boost state power generation by expanding capacity at existing facilities alongside this new project.
Officials also reviewed Central schemes, specifically PM-KUSUM and PM Surya Ghar. The government plans to increase beneficiaries for PM-KUSUM to help farmers with solar-powered irrigation. For the PM Surya Ghar program, the state will coordinate with suppliers to push rooftop solar installations for more households.
Financial health at the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited remains a focus. Revenue collection is up. Loan servicing is current. Salaries and pensions are paid on time. Sangma believes the utility is turning a corner. "The overall financial stability of MeECL has improved to a very large extent," he stated.
Management is now pivoting to demand-side efficiency. They want to cut waste and lower total power consumption across the distribution system. The Power Department must now draft detailed action plans.
Sangma also met with the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department. He wants more livestock production. The state aims to fill manpower gaps, secure animal feed, and fix veterinary hospital infrastructure. Entrepreneurs are encouraged to invest in the livestock sector to help boost farmer incomes.
