Shillong: Mawkyrwat MLA Renikton L Tongkhar plans to lobby the state government regarding mass pig deaths in the South West Khasi Hills District. African Swine Fever is the culprit. Farmers across the constituency have watched their livestock die for three months. They face massive financial hits.
Tongkhar met reporters on Saturday to discuss the crisis. He directed farmers to document their losses through their local Rangbah Shnongs. They must report these figures to the Office of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary immediately. The MLA promised to push for some form of state support to get these farmers back on their feet.
"I cannot guarantee whether the government will provide compensation, but I will raise the issue and suggest that help be provided in some form to assist farmers recovering from these heavy losses," Tongkhar said. He remains uncertain about direct cash payouts but insists the state must take action.
The MLA also pointed to insurance as a survival tool. He urged livestock owners to look into government-sponsored plans. Protect your assets. Those currently holding insurance policies should file their claims without delay.
