Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma proposed a unified tourism strategy for Northeast India during the 73rd Plenary Session of the North Eastern Council held in Shillong on June 4. Chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the meeting gathered governors, chief ministers, and senior officials to finalize a development roadmap for the region.

Sangma, who leads a high-level task force on tourism, argued that the eight northeastern states should market themselves as a collective destination rather than separate entities. The proposal encourages travel across state borders through integrated circuits, a move officials believe will significantly boost domestic and international tourism appeal.

Discussions at the plenary centered on the North East Vision Plan 2047, which aims to transform the region into a hub for economic and cultural growth. Beyond tourism, delegates reviewed progress in infrastructure, agriculture, sports, and startup development. Meghalaya showcased several local initiatives, such as the expansion of Shillong Airport and the development of new facilities like the Shillong ropeway and the Rain Museum in Mawsynram.

Regarding the changing nature of regional governance, Sangma remarked, "The NEC is increasingly evolving into a policy-driven institution focused on regional planning and coordination rather than functioning solely as a funding agency."

The state also highlighted its preparations for the 2027 National Games, confirming that its long-term sports action plan is currently underway. The plenary concluded with a commitment to stronger inter-state cooperation, identifying collaborative regional planning as the primary driver for achieving the 2047 development goals.
