Shillong: Meghalaya is undergoing a significant infrastructure transformation, highlighted by the development of eight new five-star hotels and the construction of India's largest dedicated football stadium. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma shared these details during the North East India Infrastructure Summit and Exhibition 2026 in Shillong.

The upcoming football venue, which features FIFA certification and a 40,000-seat capacity, represents an investment of Rs 800 crore. This project is central to the state's preparations to host the National Games next year. Alongside these sporting facilities, the government is expanding its tourism capacity. While the state lacked luxury accommodations several years ago, two five-star hotels have opened recently, and construction is currently underway for eight more.

Addressing attendees at the event, Sangma pointed to a shift in the region's trajectory. "The Northeast today has the vision, policy framework and political will to move forward. Earlier, we didn't dare to dream, but today we do, and that confidence is what we want investors to see," he stated. Other key projects nearing completion include the new Assembly building and a Secretariat complex.

Economic data from the state reflects this focus on growth. The Chief Minister reported that the state budget has doubled over the past eight years and is projected to triple by 2028-29. Capital expenditure has seen a six-fold increase during this period to support these long-term development goals. The summit also featured Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari and Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, who participated in discussions regarding regional connectivity and development.
