Shillong: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and his deputies, Prestone Tynsong and Sniawbhalang Dhar, received recognition from state trucking unions this week. The groups hosted a felicitation event to mark the rollout of the One-Time Settlement scheme for commercial vehicle owners. It was a rare moment of praise for the administration.
Sangma noted that politicians usually take heat when things go sour but rarely get credit for positive changes. "Politicians are usually criticised when things go wrong or when expectations are not fulfilled. However, when decisions are taken that positively impact the lives of thousands of people, such efforts are rarely recognised," he said.
The government wrote off between Rs 850 and 1,000 crore in outstanding dues. This move aimed to pull nearly 16,000 truck owners out of deep debt. Officials claim the decision supports roughly two lakh people across Meghalaya. Sangma argued that governance goes beyond building stadiums and roads, focusing instead on policies that actually help families.
Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar dismissed ongoing criticism of the government. He pointed to Rs 15,000 crore in ongoing projects ranging from healthcare to power infrastructure. The administration remains committed to its current agenda. Prestone Tynsong urged transporters to use the debt relief to grow their businesses. He called the transport sector a pillar of the state economy.
