Shillong: Meghalaya is facing a significant public health crisis, as nearly 50 percent of adults aged 15 and above now consume tobacco, leading to approximately 8,000 deaths annually. Dr. Nabaneeta D. Mawrie, the Nodal Officer for the National Tobacco Control Programme, officially launched the World No Tobacco Day 2026 campaign on Monday. Framed under the theme Tobacco! Business of DEATH, the initiative aligns with global efforts to unmask industry tactics and counter nicotine addiction.
The campaign, which commenced on April 6, aims to engage students through rallies, signature drives, and outreach programs across schools and colleges until May 31. These efforts are designed to help the younger generation make informed health choices while exposing the predatory marketing strategies used by tobacco companies. Educational officials noted that the momentum of this movement is growing, with schools serving as essential catalysts for community transformation.
This initiative builds upon the Tobacco Free Educational Institutions program, which has already reached over 9,000 schools and nearly 600,000 students across the state over the last four years in partnership with the Sambandh Health Foundation. Local authorities, including Deputy Commissioner Anendya Raajsshre, emphasized that sustained efforts and collective commitments are necessary to reduce tobacco consumption and protect public health. The campaign continues to receive widespread support from government departments, civil society, and community groups committed to a healthier future for Meghalaya.
