Shillong: Meghalaya hosted its inaugural Sports Conclave in Shillong this week, marking a strategic shift toward building a robust sporting landscape as the state prepares to host the 39th National Games in 2027. The gathering convened Olympians, coaches, and policymakers to discuss long-term infrastructure planning and athlete development.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma emphasized that the state's goals extend far beyond merely hosting tournaments. During the event, he stated, "The National Games is not merely about organising a competition. It is about building a complete sporting ecosystem that identifies talent early, nurtures excellence, creates opportunities and livelihoods, strengthens communities and inspires a generation of champions."
The event also focused on celebrating current talent. Pynshngain Kurbah, the first athlete from the state to win a rowing medal at the 2025 National Games, received the first appointment letter issued under the Meghalaya Outstanding Sportsperson Direct Appointment Policy. In total, 15 athletes across archery, athletics, swimming, weightlifting, wrestling, and football were honored with cash awards ranging from ₹25,000 to ₹87,500.
Government officials noted that these incentives aim to move the state away from historical, short-term planning. By investing in talent identification and providing consistent support, the state hopes to establish itself as a prominent national sporting hub.
