Shillong: Meghalaya kicked off a push to modernize local Industrial Training Institutes on Tuesday. Officials launched the Industry Outreach Programme at the State Convention Centre in Shillong to better link vocational training with current market demands.
The Department of Labour, Employment and Skill Development organized the event. It brought together government agencies, private companies, startups, and industry associations to bridge the gap between classroom skills and job requirements. Participants discussed expanding apprenticeship programs and updating curricula to keep pace with the modern economy.
Principal Secretary Frederick R Kharkongor stressed that building a capable workforce requires heavy lifting from both sides. He stated, "Greater industry involvement in curriculum development, apprenticeship programmes, on-the-job training and employment generation would be crucial in preparing a workforce capable of meeting changing economic and industrial demands."
Richa Kulkarni, Director of Employment and Craftsmen Training, described the event as the start of a long-term strategy to turn government centers into hubs of excellence. Stakeholders walked away with a joint plan to push the PM-SETU framework across the state, aiming to boost entrepreneurship and make graduates ready for the workforce.
